Champions League and USA v. Honduras!

Hello Footy Fans!

This week the UEFA Champions League continues with matchday 2 as does the UEFA Europa League.  The Concacaf Champions resumes group stage play as well.  We will have three live UEFA Champions League matches on Tuesday and two live games on Wednesday.  Between Fox Soccer and Setanta, nearly every game is being shown in the group stage.  And with ESPN no longer showing the UCL, the network has picked up English Premier League games and even La Liga games from Spain – and more importantly, included highlights and scores on regular broadcasts.

As with the Mexico-USA world cup qualifier, the game at Honduras has goofy TV rights.  The TV rights belong to the host nation and it can sell to anyone it wants.  The Honduras game has been sold only to closed circuit TV which means that there will be no way to watch the game at home.  The closed circuit feed is only available to bars and restaurants.  The feed, as I am sure you can imagine, is not cheap.  I am talking with the company who is selling the game in the USA and I am 99% sure that we will show it.  Right now, I want to make sure that we can show it on multiple TVs – including the new 42″ plasma outside.  The game is scheduled for 6 pm local time on Saturday, October 10th.  I will send out an email next week once I know absolutely that the feed will work out.  We will not be charging any kind of cover for USA fans, but I would ask that folks coming to the game realize that we will be spending an enormous amount of money to show the game and to try and spend at least $15 or so each.

DUE TO THE OVERWHELMING RESPONSE FROM USA FANS, THERE WILL BE NO AWAY FANS ALLOWED.  There are several Spanish Language outlets for the game in town and we will certainly be at capacity with just USA fans.

The Costa Rica game is at home for the USA and will be on ESPN on the 14th.  I am very optimistic about my chances of breaking out our USA yard glass to celebrate making it into the 2010 World Cup.  For those who were at the last game, it was very much enjoyed around the entire bar.  If you would like a USA yard glass of your own, visit our friend and professional glass blower, Dave Savarese, at his webiste – www.artisticglasscreations.com.  Dave donated the USA yard glass to the bar for USA soccer matches and to commemorate O’Brien’s becoming San Diego’s only official US Soccer bar.  Hopefully we will all drink from it soon.

The big Chelsea v. Liverpool game will be replayed just after we open at Noon.  The Chargers play at 5:30 pm this Sunday, so the game will be shown on the big screen inside.

Double Sculpin on Thursday!!!!

Hello All,

Just a web update this week as I leave in a few hours for the Great American Beer Festival.  The big news is that we will have two casks of Ballast Point Sculpin IPA on tap this Thursday, September 24th.  We’ll tap the first one at 5 pm and the second one right after the first one is gone.  Friday the25th is Sierra Nevad day featuring a keg of the Estate Harvest – made with Chico grown hops and malt.

Who knows if the Chargers will be on TV – we’ll be open 12-6 pm either way.  Go buy some tickets to the game, please!

Our Beer and Cheese Tasting classes are almost half sold out.  The classes are October 7th and 11th – the 7th at Taste in Hillcrest and the 11th at O’Brien’s, both at 6:30 pm.  Cost is $40 and you can sign up at the pub or call Taste (619-683-2306) to pay with a credit card.

That is all for now.  I will have a link to the winners list on Saturday.  Cheers, Tom

Mead, Beer Fest and 91X!

Hello Beer Fans!

Just a short pub update this week.  First off, I am going to be on 91X’s Beer 4 Breakfast tomorrow morning, Thursday the 17th around 8:15 am.  You can tune in and listen to us drink some beers from North Coast Brewing Co. including the very delicious Old Rasputin 12 – which is supposed to be coming in on draft next month.  I will also be promoting the San Diego Festival of Beer which takes place downtown this Friday night from 6-11 pm.  More than 50 breweries will be pouring beer at this happy hour in the streets.  Live music, food, general revelry and 100% of the money goes to local cancer charities.  I will be easy to spot as I will be the guy propping up what is sure to be a very drunk Corbin.

This Week at the Pub

Later Thursday night at the pub we will have cask of Alpine Pure Hoppiness at 5 pm and the new Stone Vertical Epic 09/09/09 on tap.  This is the first year that Stone has regularly released the epic on draft and I am pretty excited to taste it – I hear it is an Imperial Belgian Porter with tangerine zest, vanilla bean and a bit of French oak.  We’ll also have the Port Brewing Wipeout IPA back on tap.  And if you haven’t tried the Pizza Port Carlsbad Night Rider Imperial Stout – get it while it lasts.  Look for a keg of Sticky Stout from Pizza Port once the Night Rider is gone.  And speaking of our favorite talking car, check out the Hoff Burger, with a crazy good beer cheese made with the Night Rider stout.  From here on out, no more David Hasselhoff references – I promise.

Friday night is the aforementioned San Diego Festival of Beer and also a mead night at O’Brien’s featuring Mountain Meadows Mead.  We will have four varities of mead available by the bottle (you can take home any unused portion of the bottle to drink later – just keep your cork) or by the glass.  This is a great opportunity to try mead, which is honey wine, if you never have.  Or it can be a great chance to try four different meads without buying four whole bottles.  We will have Moonlight Magic (semi-sweet), Honeymoon (sweet), Spice (with ginger) and Agave Nectar.  Mountain Meadows is a small meadery in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in Northern California up near Chico (aka beer Mecca – I do strongly believe that all faithful should make at least one pilgrimage to the Sierra Nevada brewery and pub in their lifetime, or maybe more than one).

This weekend will be your last chance to have at our complete list of new bottles released over Labor Day weekend.  A few have already sold out and a few need to be stored away to make room for other bottles.  We will be featuring bottles from a different brewery for each of the next few Saturday nights.  And a few of the bottles will make it on our regular bottle list next week.  So if you haven’t had a crack at all of the new bottles, take advantage of our 10% off all weekend – and we will again be offering an additional 10% off any import bottle to-go.  By Monday I will have a new regular list out.  There are some truly great bottles including beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Mikkeller, Dieu de Ciel, Ridgeway, Ise Kadoya, Baird, De Ranke, Nogne O and De Graal.  I have previously posted the list on our website in the news section – just scroll down a bit and you will find it.

Chargers?

The big mystery of the weekend is whether or not any of us will be able to watch the Charger game without actually attending it.  The only blackout I like was by the Scorpions in the early 80s.  For my sake, I encourage you to buy a ticket, because I would really like to watch the game at home on Sunday at 1:15 pm.  Next weekend is a home game as well, so we might be screwed for a few weeks.  If the specter of blackout is lifted we will have the game on.

On the up side, we have our fancy new TVs up and running.  The two new flat screens inside both now have High Def receiver boxes hooked up and look great.  And the new TV outside is awesome and easily viewable from anywhere in the front part of the patio.  Hopefully the Chargers will look great on all of them this weekend, but we’ll see.  As soon as one of the 10 am games rolls around, we will open early and do breakfast.

In the other kind of football, the UEFA Champions League will continue group play on September 29th and 30th.

Beer and Cheese

Our Beer and Cheese classes for October will be on Wednesday the 7th at Taste in Hillcrest and Sunday the 11th at O’Brien’s, both at 6:30 pm.  The classes are $40 and will include 6-8 beers and cheeses paired together along with witty banter from myself and Taste co-owner George Palmer.  For the fall classes, we usually take an around the world approach with beers and cheeses from different countries.  We will have the final pairings set towards the end of the month.  When we do, I will tell you more.

Next week is the Great American Beer Festival.  I will be hard at work judging the winning beers (really).  So no email.  Check the events board at the pub or the website for casks and events next week.  Go Chargers.  Go ticket sales.  We’ll see you soon for a great local beer. Cheers, Tom

PS This email was brought to you with the help of Ballast Point Sculpin – now available in 22 oz bottles around town and at the pub.

Bottles, USA and Pizza Port

Hello All,

Just a short web update today to tell you that nearly all of our new bottles are still available.  More than 55 new bottles remain.  For many of these rare bottles, when they are gone we will not be able to restock them.  So if you missed this weekend, make sure to stop in and peruse the list.

Wednesday the 9th, the USA soccer team plays Trinidad and Tabago at 4 pm.  We were rocking for Saturday’s game and I expect a good crowd tomorrow.  We’ll replay the game at 6:30 pm for the afterwork crowd as well.

Thursday the 10th we’ll have a cask of Pizza Port Carlsbad’s Poor Man’s IPA and a Pizza Port draft night complete with owner Vince Marsaglia cooking up some food specials in the kitchen.

More news later in a full email.  Cheers, Tom

Bottle Bonanza Weekend!!!

Hello Beer Lovers!

This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is our big Bottle Bonanza with lots of rare beers that were left from the San Diego International Beer Festival at the county fair.  We have about 70 new bottles from over a dozen different countries including Denmark, Norway, Japan, Scotland, England, Belgium, Holland, Canada and of course the USA.  I have posted the list on line on our website in the news section.  There are likely to be a few last minute additions to the list by Friday.  So visit www.obrienspub.net and check it out.

Bottle Bonanza

We will be offering 10% off any import bottle to-go on Friday the 4th with an additional 10% off to-go bottles on Saturday and Sunday.  All of the bottles will be 10% off to drink at the pub on Saturday and Sunday.  I will have a few of the bottles available on Wednesday and Thursday – just check the draft board area to see what is available.  Just don’t come by on Monday looking for the bottles – we will be closed for Labor Day.  I have a full case of nearly all of the beers so I expect the vast majority of them to be around all weekend.  And if you can’t stop by O’Brien’s, visit the Toronado in North Park where many of the same bottles will also be available.  So if you missed the San Diego International Beer Festival, this is a great way to sample some of the great beer that was there.

Before the bottle madness gets under way, we will tap two casks for Thursday night, the 3rd.  We will have Alpine Bad Boy double IPA and Pizza Port San Clemente Killer Dana double IPA both on tap at 5 pm.  You can also check out the new Firestone Double Jack double IPA, Widmer Broken Halo IPA (only 2 kegs in San Diego and Weihenstephan Hefe Weiss all on tap.  We are already on our third keg of the Avery Piglet Purgatory session IPA.  If you haven’t tried it yet, this is a great 4.5% hoppy ale with plenty of flavor.  Look for the Guinness 250th Anniversary stout to be on tap this weekend.

US Soccer

Saturday the 5th we will show our first USA soccer match as an official US Soccer Bar.  The USA plays El Salvador at 5 pm in world cup qualifying.  To help us get in the cheering mood, I will tap a keg of Ballast Point Sculpin IPA at 4:30 pm.  The USA plays again on Wednesday the 9th at 4 pm against Trinidad and Tobago.  I will find something special to tap for that game as well.  So come drink great beer and cheer on the USA (El Salvador and Trinidad and Tobago fans are kindly invited to visit Players just around the corner for the game).

Next Week

The pub will be CLOSED on Monday, September 7th for Labor Day so that all of our employees can enjoy the holiday.  Enjoy some great local beer at home with a roaring BBQ.  I am looking forward to finding out which rib rub best pairs up with dark rum for the holiday.

Thursday the 10th we will tap a cask of Poor Man’s IPA from Pizza Port Carlsbad.  It will also be the opening night of the NFL season with Tennessee playing at Pittsburgh at 5:30 pm.  Then we will feature 5 different draft beers from Pizza Port Carlsbad on Friday the 11th including Poor Man’s, Night Rider, Trigger Hoppy Belgo-IPA and two new IPAs – The Jetty, which will be the house IPA for the eventual Ocean Beach Pizza Port and a new IPA from brewer Noah Regnery at Pizza Port San Clemente.  We might even be lucky enough to get a keg of Swami’s IPA from Pizza Port Solana Beach.

The following week, the Chargers open up regular season play against AFC West rivals the Raiders in Oakland at 7 pm on Monday the 14th.  It is part of a Monday night double header that also features Buffalo v. New England.  The league is kicking off the Monday night season with an old AFL double header as it celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the AFL.  And we will have our great pitcher special during the games – $10 pitchers and $14 strong ale pitchers from 4:30 pm to close.  Later in the week we will have a cask of Alpine Pure Hoppiness on Thursday the 17th.

Beer and Cheese

I have the sign up sheets out for our October Beer and Cheese Pairings with Taste Artisan Cheese and Gourmet Shop.  As an bonus for those who sign up early, we are doing a drawing to have two lucky winners join us as we set the final pairings!  It is a tough job of tasting more than a dozen beer and cheese combinations over several hours.  If you sign up for either class by Labor Day, you will be entered into the drawing.  The classes are Wednesday, October 7th at Taste in Hillcrest or Sunday, October 11th at O’Brien’s.  Both classes will start at 6:30 pm and are $40.

Festival Time

The San Diego Festival of Beer is coming back to downtown on Friday, September 18th from 6-11 pm.  The event features more than 50 breweries and live music on the streets of downtown.  It is put on by the San Diego Professionals Against Cancer and 100% of the proceeds are donated to local cancer charities.  If you are looking for a place to stay, the fest has partnered up with the W Hotel to provide a special room rate that includes tickets to the fest.  For more info on the fest, visit www.sdbeerfest.org.

The Great American Beer Festival will be September 24, 25 and 26 in Denver, CO.  Many of San Diego’s great breweries will be represented.  Look for the winners list to be posted on line Saturday afternoon.

That is your good beer news for now.  We’ll see you soon for a great bottled beer.  Cheers, Tom

This weekend is our big bottle bonanza and I wanted to post up the list of what will be available.  I have one case of most beers so I expect the vast majority of them to be around all weekend.  We will be offering 10% off any import bottle on this list to-go on Friday.  Over the weekend, you can get 10% off any of these bottles to drink at the pub and an additional 10% off any import bottles to-go with a limit of one per person.  I will have a few of the bottles for sale on Wednesday and Thursday night – just check the draft board area for what is available.  We’ll see you soon for a great bottled beer.  Cheers, Tom
