Nor Cal, Birthdays and Cheese at O’Brien’s!

Hello Beer Fans!

Time for another great beer update from O’Brien’s.  Tonight we are doing the first of our three Beer and Cheese pairings and there have been some last minute cancellations.  If you are interested, the class is at 7 pm at Taste in Hillcrest – please call them at 619-683-2306 to reserve a spot.  I’ll have more info on our other classes in a bit.

Also tonight, Wednesday the 22nd, we are featuring some of the Italian craft beers that we had on during our Pizza Night a few weeks ago.  The del Ducato Verdi Imperial Stout with hot chilis and the Birrificio Troll Shangrila with tandori spices are both on tap right now.  If one of them empties, I still have the two more to put on tap.  And we have several other great new beers on tap including Coronado Idiot IPA, Alpine Duet IPA, Ballast Point Abandon Ship Smoked Lager, Dogfish Head Aprihop IPA (made with apricots), Port Brewing Old Viscosity and Lost Coast Old Ale.

Thursday the 23rd is Coral’s last night at the pub.  The Old Viscosity is on tap for her and we have a very special cask of Reef Rye Brown from Ballast Point at 5 pm.  On the food front, we will have Mac n’ Cheese on special also per her request.  So stop by and help us wish her well.

Friday night the 24th is Nor Cal beer night with lots of great beer on tap.  In addition to our regular Bear Republic Racer 5, Russian River IPA, Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and the already mentioned Lost Coast Old Ale we will have Marin IPA, Moylan’s Double Kiltlifter, Lagunitas Gnarleywine, Drake’s Denogginizer and a collaboration brew from Triple Rock and Green Flash called Red Rock Rye.  It will be a great night of great beer from the upper half of California.

There will be plenty of new bottles to look forward to this weekend.  We already have in Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, Lindeman’s Cuvee Rene, Avery Maharaja, Stone Imperial Russian Stout and Aspall Organic English Cider.  Look for some new Fantome and Cantillon bottles on Saturday including Fou Fonne – the apricot lambic from Cantillon.

Next Week

Next week you can look forward to the birthday bash for Pat McIllhenney from Alpine Beer Company and Tyson Blake from San Diego Brewing Company.  In their honor we are tapping casks of Exponential Hoppiness and Lagunitas Correction IPA – a new 7.2% IPA from the brewery that I have not yet even tried.  We’ll also have the Ballast Point Victory at Sea on tap and a keg of Avery Maharaja.  Thursday the 30th we will tap a cask of the very popular AleSmith IPA.

We have some amazing casks coming in the next few weeks.  May 6th – Alpine Duet IPA, May 7th – Port 3rd Anniversary Double IPA and Pizza Port Carlsbad Poor Man’s IPA, May 13th – Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, May 14th – Stone Russian Imperial Stout and beyond that we will still have casks of Alpine Nelson Rye-IPA and Alpine Bad Boy coming.  It is going to be an incredible few weeks of cask beer.

Beer and Cheese Please

As mentioned, we have a few seats open for the class at Taste, tonight – Wednesday the 22nd at 7 pm.  We also have added a third class on Sunday, May 3rd at O’Brien’s at 6:30 pm due to popular demand.  We have set the final pairings for the class and I am very excited about it.  We have several firsts in this upcoming class that are very different from the pairings we have done in the past.  Among things we are using for the first time – a double IPA, an English cider, Parmigianno Reggiano cheese and the Malheur Dark Brut.  Cost for the class is $40 and will include 7 beers and 8 cheeses total.  You can sign up at the pub (cash only please) or contact Taste (find the link on our friends page of the website) to pay with a credit card.  We already have more than one third of the seats sold for the third class and like the two previous classes, we expect this one to sell out.

Bowling and Beer Camp

Team O’Brien’s – Micaela, Kat and Tiff – have done a wonderful job raising money for the Bowling for Animals charity event happening this weekend on Sunday the 26th.  They are raising money to help fund spay and neutering clinics for SNAP, a local group that promotes zero euthanasia of pets.  If you would like to make a donation, the girls have forms at the pub or you can go online at: www.firstgiving.com/teamobriens and make a contribution which is tax dedcutible.

In other beer news, Jeff Bagby, Tomme Arthur and myself returned safely from Sierra Nevada Beer Camp up in Chico, CA.  We brewed the strongest beer that they have ever made on their pilot system – an 11% abv Imperial Stout.  Expect it to be down here sometime in early June.  The brewery was amazing – a true pilgrimage for beer fans.  It is truly impressive.  The restaurant is equally amazing – great food, spent-grain fed beef, classic interior and lots of Sierra Nevada specialty beer – everything you want in a great brewery restaurant.  And Chico is an astonishingly cheap town to drink in, and everyone serves Sierra.  If you have the chance I highly recommend visiting Sierra Nevada.

That is your good beer news for now.  Don’t forget to load up on Forever stamps at the Post Office – stamps go to 44 cents on May 11th.  We’ll see you soon for a great beer.  Cheers, Tom

Coral Farewell, Nor Cal Beers and Beer and Cheese in May!

Hello All,

Just a quick web update until the new email comes out.

Thursday the 23rd we are having a farewell party for Coral.  She is moving on after 2 and half years at the pub.  We will have a very special cask from Ballast Point – Reef Rye Brown Ale.  This is the only keg or cask of this beer to leave the brewery.  And since it is one of Coral’s favorites, we will also have the Port Brewing Old Viscosity on tap.  And Lindsey will be cooking up a batch of her famous beer chili along with some other great food specials.  So please stop by and help us say good bye and good luck to Coral on her last night.  And don’t worry, Coral has already promised to become a regular on the other side of the bar!

Friday the 24th we are hosting a night of Northern California beers.  In addition to our regular Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada and Russian River beers we will be featuring Drake’s Denogginizer double IPA, Marin IPA, Moylan’s Double Kiltlifter and a collaboration beer from Triple Rock and Chuck Silva, head brewer at Green Flash – Red Rock Rye.  In all, we should have at least 8 Nor Cal beers on tap.  And if you miss them on Friday, I expect them to be on tap all weekend.

Beer and Cheese Three

We have added a third Beer and Cheese class on Sunday, May 3rd at O’Brien’s at 6:30 pm due to popular demand since our first two classes sold out so quickly. If you want to go, I would make sure you buy your tickets by the 25th to guarantee a spot.

Next Week

Wednesday, April 29th we will be throwing a double birthday party for Pat McIllhenney of Alpine Beer Company and Tyson Blake from San Diego Brewing Company.  To celebrate the occasion we will have a fantastic line up of beer – casks of Alpine Exponential Hoppiness and Lagunitas Correction Ale – a brand new strong IPA that we are the first to get down here.  We will have draft kegs of Ballast Point Victory at Sea and Dogfish Head Aprihop – an IPA made with apricots, fruity, hoppy and quite delicious.  So join us for great beer and good friends.  Thursday the 30th we will tap a cask of AleSmith IPA.

Bowling for Animals

Team O’Brien’s has raised lots of money so far for the Bowling for Animals charity tournament.  There are sponsorship and donation forms at the pub or you can donate on line at www.firstgiving.com/teamobriens.  Kat, Tiff and Micaela thank everyone for their very generous support of a cause that is very dear to all of them.  The tournament is this Sunday, April 26th so you can donate up until Saturday night.

That is your good beer news for now.  Look for a full email later in the week.  Cheers, Tom

Firestone, Nor Cal and Expo!

Hello Beer Fans!

As always, there is a lot of great beer news to tell you about this week.  The big happening in the industry is the nation wide one day theater release of the movie Beer Wars.  It will be shown Thursday night, April 16th in several theaters around town including in Mission Valley.  After the movie, a live panel featuring big names in beer interviewed by Ben Stein will be simulcast to the theaters.  This is the first airing of the documentary that follows the growth of craft beer against the back drop of the big three brewers in the US.  For more info and show times, visit www.beerwarsmovie.com.

Back on the local front at the pub, we are featuring Firestone Brewery this week.  The brewery has won more awards than I can remember.  Head brewer Matt Brynildson is just an amazing brewer.  And if you are driving up the 101 through Paso Robles the brewery is less than 100 feet from the freeway and worth the stop.  The tasting room has an excellent selection of beers – available by the pint.  On the weekends, there is even BBQ food for sale.  So forget about Paso as Wine Country – it is good beer country as well.

Thursday the 16th we will tap a cask of Firestone Walker’s Reserve Porter at 5 pm.  This is the first time that we have had this delicious porter cask conditioned and I am expecting it to be very tasty.  Friday the 17th we will have three beers on tap from Firestone – Lil Opal Wit, Union Jack IPA and Abacus barrel aged barleywine.  The Lil Opal Wit is already on tap and tasting great.  I will miss the Firestone night as I will be in Chico at the Sierra Nevada brewery with friends Jeff Bagby and Tomme Arthur for Beer Camp.  The three of us will get to collaborate on a recipe for the brewery’s pilot system that will then be served down here when it is ready.  So look forward to something good in about 6 weeks from Sierra.

Beer and Cheese Three

We have added a third class on Sunday, May 3rd at O’Brien’s at 6:30 pm due to popular demand since our first two classes sold out so quickly. We already have more than 25% of the seats sold for the third class and like the two previous classes, we expect this one to sell out.  If you want to go, I would make sure you buy your tickets by the 24th to guarantee a spot.

Next Week and Beyond

Looking further ahead, we will have an AleSmith IPA cask on Thursday, April 30th.  VIP tickets for the San Diego Real Ale Festival will be on sale on Friday, May 1st at www.pizzaport.com.  The fest is June 12th and 13th and will feature more than 50 cask conditioned beers.  VIP tickets will be $40.  Stone Imperial Russian Stout will be on cask on Thursday, May 7th.  And later in May you can look forward to Ballast Point Sculpin IPA on cask and the long awaited return of Alpine Bad Boy on draft.

Bowling for the Animals 2009

The 11th Annual Bowling for the Animals will take place Sunday April 26th, 2009 at the Vista Entertainment Center and our own Micaela Cano is heading up Team O’Brien’s (along with Kat and Tiff).
Bowling for the Animals is an annual fundraising event. Bowlers and supporters collect sponsorship pledges from friends, family, and fellow animal lovers.  The 2009 event will benefit an exciting new project: a stationary clinic dedicated to low-cost spay/neuter!

SNAP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the goal of “zero euthanasia” of adoptable companion animals in San Diego County. SNAP raises public awareness through education, and provides the public with access to reduced-rate spay/neuter for their pets.  The 2008 even raised $13,000 to benefit SNAP and the Feral Cat Coalition.

Micaela has donation and sponsorship forms at the pub if you would like to help us support her and Team O’Brien’s in Bowling for the Animals.

That is your good beer news for now.  We’ll see you soon for a great beer.  Cheers, Tom

Pizza Night, Casks and Lagunitas

Hello fellow Beer Lovers!

We have a great slate of events coming up at the pub in the next few weeks including Pizza Night, pint nights with Lagunitas and Firestone, Nor Cal brewery night, an Alpine birthday party and our Beer and Cheese pairings with Taste Cheese shop in Hillcrest.  So, as usual, there is much good beer news to share with you.

I will start with some new beers on tap and in the bottle.  We have found one last keg of Sierra Nevada Harvest – I thought it was all gone, but then one turns up.  We have the Firestone Lil Opal on tap which is an excellent wit-inspired beer with an excellent spice note to it.  Full Sail Imperial Porter and Shipyard Imperial Porter are both still on tap, the Shipyard is only about 7.5%, but the Full Sail is a bit stronger at nearly 10% – both are quite good.  For stout fans, the Murphy’s Stout is on tap.  It is the sweetest of three major Irish stouts, without the bitterness or sourness found in Guinness.  New in the bottle we have Lost Abbey Angel’s Share in 750ml bottles.  This delicious brandy barrel aged barleywine is one of the world’s best.  Ballast Point Dorado Double IPA is available in 22 oz bottles now.  Alpine Ichabod, the pumpkin dunkleweizen is back on the list.  Hair of the Dog Adam, a massive 10% dark ale is brand new to us along with the Avery Brabant, a barrel aged wild ale that is 100% brettanomyces fermented.

This Week

Wednesday the 8th is our Pizza Port Pizza Night with owner Vince Marsaglia.  It is also Italian Craft Beer night and we will have several Port Brewing beers.  Vince will be bringing down his mobile pizza kitchen and making up fantastic pizzas for dinner.  The pizzas will be all one size and we should have 5-6 specialties from which to choose.  I estimate that the mobile kitchen will be up and running around 5:30 pm or 6 pm.  Due to the limited space Vince has to cook, it will likely take at least 15-20 minutes for your pizza to come up – so please be patient.

On the beer front we will have 4 very rare Italian craft beers in Vince’s honor.  These are all beers that we have never had on tap, that I have never tasted on tap and have never even seen on tap.  All are very unique.  From Birrificio di Como we have Malthus Birolla, a 6.5% Chestnut ale using fresh, local chestnuts from the area around Lago di Como.  Chiostro from Piccolo Birrificio is a beer that uses arthemisia absinthium, or wormwood in it – the major herbal ingredient in Absinthe.  Verdi Imperial Stout from Birrificio del Ducato is an 8.2% Imperial Stout spiced with hot chilis.  And finally from Birrificio Troll we will pour Shangrila, an 8.5% amber hued strong ale made with tandori spices from India.  This is a very rare chance to sample some of the incredible beers in the Italian craft brewing scene.  We will be offering 5, 8.5 and 14 ounce glasses of each beer.

And it just wouldn’t be Pizza Night without a few Port beers.  We will have Hop 15, Lost Abbey Carnevale – a saison brewed with domestic hop varieties and Hot Rocks Lager – a stein or stone beer that used hot rocks in the brewing process to carmelize part of the maltose sugars in the boil.  The beer was a collaboration with Tonya Cornett from Bend Brewing in Oregon and it is a very smooth amber lager.  And just because we can, I am also tapping an Austrian stein beer – Granit Bock from Brauerei Hofstetten.  It too uses hot granite rocks in the brewing process and his from the area where the tradition began.  So two stein beers on tap at once just for your tasting pleasure.  That makes 8 special beers for Pizza Night, so enjoy.

Thursday the 9th we tap our first cask of Green Flash’s great 30th Street Pale Ale.  This is a very hoppy pale ale and I can’t wait to taste it cask conditioned.  Look for the new Roast Beef Cobb sandwich on the specials board Thursday and Friday.  Friday the 10th is Lagunitas night with 5 beers on tap including Hop Stoopid, IPA, Gnarleywine, Brown Shugga and Undercover Shutdown Ale.  We’ll have some Lagunitas pint glasses for sale in addition to the glassware we have for sale now – Gouden Carolous, New Belgium etched goblets, Steenbrugge, Palm, and pints from Deschutes, Russian River and O’Brien’s.  Friday is also now officially Torta day at lunch.  We have ordered even more of the Torta rolls and you can expect to see them every Friday.

Over the weekend we will be open normal hours on Saturday the 11th, but we will be CLOSED on Sunday the 12th for Easter.  Normal hours will resume on Monday, and no, this isn’t a portent of the end of the world.  You can drink all of your favorite beers on Saturday and even take home a bottle to go (at 10% off all day no less).  There is also plenty of Lindsey’s amazing beer cheese available to go for you to enjoy.  Check the board next to the tap list for the current flavors.

Beer and Cheese Please

Our Beer and Cheese pairing classes are filling up fast.  The first class at Taste on Wednesday the 22nd is sold out.  Web update – there are only 4 seats left as of Thursday afternoon (4/9).  Cost is $40 and you can sign up at the pub (cash only please) or contact Taste to pay with a credit card (find the link on our Friends page on the website).  We have started a waiting list for a potential third class if you can not make the Sunday class – you can also sign up for that at the pub.  All of the final pairings have not yet been set, but so far we have some really great matches – some that even really surprised me.  If you are interested in going, sign up soon.  I think that be next week, the class on the 26th will be sold out.

Next Week and Beyond

We will be featuring Firestone next week.  Thursday the 16th we will tap a cask of Firestone Walker’s Reserve Porter at 5 pm.  This is also a new cask to us.  The Firestone Porter is a great beer and can only improve with the smoothness of cask conditioning.  Friday the 17th we will have a Firestone Night with Lil Opal, Union Jack and Abacus barrel aged barleywine all on tap.

Also next week is the one night only movie event for Beer Wars on Thursday the 16th.  The documentary movie will be showing in theaters for one night only with a live simulcast after the movie that will feature some of the industry’s biggest names interviewed by Ben Stein.  For more information and showtimes around town check out www.beerwarsmovie.com.  It is basically the story of small breweries vs. the big three over the last few years.  I know it is playing in Mission Valley – check the website for other theaters.

The following week we will have Nor Cal beer night on Friday the 24th with beer from Moylan’s, Marin, Drake’s, Triple Rock, Bear Republic and Russian River.  Among beers on tap will be Marin IPA, Moylan’s Double Kiltlifter, Drake’s Denoggenizer and the collaboration brew between Triple Rock and Green Flash – Red Rock Rye.

At the end of the month you can look forward to our annual birthday party for Pat McIllhenney of Alpine Beer Company.  In his honor we will be tapping a cask of Pat’s Exponential Hoppiness at 6 pm.  And just for good measure, we will have a keg of Ballast Point’s Victory at Sea on tap, because one super strong beer is never enough.  The next day on the 30th, we will have a cask of AleSmith IPA at 5 pm.

So that is your good beer news for now.  If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our own Micaela Cano as bartender of the month at Sign On San Diego: http://www.signonsandiego.com/feature/one-more-round/ Also Check out the new dinner menu at the Toronado in North Park.  We’ll see you soon for a great beer.  Cheers, Tom
