Pub Closed 24th-26th, Chargers at 5:15 on 12/28!

Just a quick pre-Christmas update.  The pub will be open late tonight, Tuesday the 23rd, for our final night open before Christmas.  We will have three beers from Hollister Brewing in Santa Barbara on tap – Tim’s Strong Pale, The Pope IPA and Bowling and Beyond Double IPA.  We also have St. Bernardus Christmas and Corsendonk Christmas on tap and the great Belgian sour brown Bacchus.

The pub will be closed Wednesday thru Friday, December 24th to 26th for the holiday.  We will return to normal hours on the Saturday the 27th at Noon.

Sunday the 28th the pub will be open late for the now prime-time Chargers vs. Broncos game at 5:15 pm.  We’ll stay open until at least 9 pm with the kitchen open until halftime.  It is basically a pre-playoff game – we win and we play next week in the wild card round (and we get to send Denver packing which would feel great!).  So stop by and cheer on the resurgent bolts as they battle for the post-season.

The pub will also be closed Wednesday and Thursday, December 31st and January 1st for New Year’s.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday season and wherever you may find yourself – enjoy a good beer!  Cheers, Tom

New Beers and a New Year!

Hello Beer Fans!

It is hard to believe that 2009 is almost upon us.  It has been a great 2008 at the pub and we will start 2009 off with the 15th Anniversary of O’Brien’s Pub in January.  The pub was founded in 1994 by Jim O’Brien and was the first account for most of San Diego’s local breweries.  It was also the first pub to serve cask conditioned beer in San Diego.  Lindsey and I have been growing the legacy of good beer since 2003 and this will mark our 6th year owning the pub.  As you might suspect I have a few good beer events planned to mark the occasion.  Instead of the normal Anniversary week we have had to expand to Anniversary Month.  But more on that later on in the newsletter.  For now, let me focus on what you will be enjoying this week at O’Brien’s.

This Week

We are tapping our last cask beer of the year this Thursday, December 18th.  We will be closed the next two Thursdays, December 25th and January 1st.  To celebrate the end of the year, we are tapping a very special cask from Alpine Beer Company – Bad Boy Double IPA, brewed by and mostly named for Shawn McIllhenney at Alpine.  We will tap the cask at 5 pm and I do not expect it to last very long.  To help out those who may not be able to make it early enough to enjoy the cask I will also have a draft keg on tap at 5 pm.  That is more than 25 gallons of Bad Boy and while I will not dare you to drink it all (because I think you all would), I will venture a guess that there might just be a little bit left at the end of the evening.

And while you are at the pub, check out our new merchandise – new men’s and women’s shirts including long sleeves and new sweatshirts.

Friday the 19th we will reprise our Winter beer night with Belgian and American beers including four beers that are on tap now – Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, St. Bernardus Christmas, Sierra Nevada Celebration and New Belgium Abbey Grand Cru.  Look for other great winter beers like Gouden Carolous Noel and Corsendonk Christmas to be on tap as well.  I keep buying more of the St. Bernardus Christmas and I expect it to be on tap until at least the first week of January.

Saturday the 20th we will have some new bottles from Hair of the Dog in Oregon.  We will have the Blue Dot Double IPA and Fred from the Wood.  Fred is a big massive dark beer named for beer writer Fred Eckhardt.  Only 20 cases of this made it to Southern California and we were lucky enough to get one.  This is a beer that we have never carried at the pub before and I am very excited about it.  Both bottles will be for sale all day and 10% off all weekend.  We also have some other great new bottles – AleSmith YuleSmith and Barrel Aged Old Numbskull, Hanssen’s Kriek, the epic Firestone 12 (a blend of many different bourbon barrel aged beers) and the Hitachino XH – a Belgian brown from Japan aged in sake barrels – it is delicious.  And we still have all of our big bottles in stock and the great Danish meads.

Sunday the 21st is the Charger’s national kick in the teeth as their previously prime time game against Tampa Bay is the victim of flexible scheduling (a euphemism for replacing match ups with lousy teams with hopefully more important games).  The game is now on at 10 am instead of 5:15 pm.  So in place of staying open late, we will open early for one more last Chargers breakfast.  We will have mimosas and great breakfast specials from 10 am to Noon and then switch over to our regular menu inlcuding Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos.

The Rest of the Year

Next week is very short due to Christmas.  We will be open Monday the 22nd and Tuesday the 23rd and then not again until Saturday the 27th.  Every year we close down the 24th, 25th and 26th of December so that we and our employees may spend time with family for Christmas.  It is a family run business and family is an important part of truly being successful in life.  So you will have to forgive us what may seem like a cruel gesture of denying you Pliny or Pure Hoppiness for a few days.  May I suggest that you could use this time to visit some of San Diego’s other fine beer establishments like Downtown Johnny Brown’s, Hamilton’s, Churchill’s, San Diego Brewing Company, Toronado, etc…

That said, we will be having our great pitcher special on Monday the 22nd – $9 pitchers and $13 pitchers of strong ales.  It is our special every Monday night of the year and it is hard to beat.  And here I have some good news/bad news for you.  Due to the increase of malt and hops this year, the price of Blind Pig is going up.  Now that sounds like only bad news, but Blind Pig will now be priced like all of the other strong/rare ales and as such, you will now be able to order pitchers and you guessed it, that means $13 pitchers of Blind Pig on Monday nights!

Tuesday the 23rd is our annual Christmas Eve-Eve party.  It is always a night filled with good cheer at the pub.  And to help the cheer along I will have 3 beers from Hollister Brewing in Santa Barbara on tap – Bowling and Beyond Double IPA, Tim’s Strong Pale and The Pope IPA.  All of the beers are just in 5 gallon kegs so they may not all last through the night.  So please stop by for a little holiday cheer with good friends and good beer.

Just to emphasize the point – THE PUB WILL BE CLOSED DECEMBER 24TH, 25TH AND 26TH!

Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th we will be open normal hours.  And if the football gods are willing, the Chargers will be playing at 1 pm against Denver for the AFC West Division title and a place in the playoffs.  I can hardly believe I just wrote that.

The pub will be open normal hours on Monday and Tuesday, December 29th and 30th.  Tuesday, December 30th will be our annual New Year’s Eve-Eve party (see the theme?).  It is another night of great cheer and lots of champagne (roederer estate sparkling wine to be precise) and cham-Pliny cocktails (champagne and Pliny – very good, just ask Kat) and Malheur Brut and Dark Brut and Deus!  It is a great place to ring in the new year a little early, without having to worry about all of the real drunks that will be out on the road on the 31st.  So help us raid Lindsey’s Champagne supply and toast farewell to 2008 and a welcome to 2009.

THE PUB WILL BE CLOSED WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 31ST AND THURSDAY, JANUARY 1ST!

Coming in 2009!

So I am not going to detail all of January’s 15th Anniversary events, since I haven’t made up all of the details yet.  I can tell you that we will be tapping special beers and special casks throughout the month and releasing special bottles.  We will start off with a bang on Friday, January 2nd – our first day open in the new year.  I am putting some very special beers on tap for our employee party and we will have all of the beers on tap on Friday the 2nd.  The line-up will include – Alpine Bad Boy, Ballast Point Sculipin IPA, Pizza Port Solana Beach Swami’s IPA and Deschutes Abyss among others.  I will probably find room to tap a few more special beers, but suffice it to say that we will have an incredible tap line up from the very first day of the year.

The main promos for the month focus on Thursday/Friday, cask/tap combinations.  Each Thursday we will be featuring some fantastic cask beers and each Friday we will feature a huge line-up of beers from that brewery on tap.  Here is the line-up of our great brewery events:

Jan. 8/9 – Green Flash (West Coast IPA cask)
Jan. 15/16 – Pizza Port Carlsbad (Poor Man’s IPA cask)
Jan. 22/23 – Port Brewing and Lost Abbey (Hop 15 cask and a special barrel blend just for O’Brien’s!)
Jan. 29/30 – Russian River – Southern California’s first TION night with a dozen of Vinnie’s Belgian-style beers on tap!

For each brewery night, I expect to have at least 10 beers on tap.  Each brewer is pulling out some great beers and some will only be in five gallon kegs.  I will be going up to Lost Abbey in January to blend the beer with Tomme for our Anniversary.  I have no idea yet what it will be or how much we will get.  For the Russian River TION night I expect to have nearly 20 Russian River beers on tap and Vinnie Cilurzo himself will be there.  All of Russian River’s Belgian-style beers end with TION, like Damnation, Supplication, etc.., hence the TION night.  We will also have some special library/reserve bottles for sale inlcuding 3 liter bottles of Damnation.  I will have a complete calendar of events along with some expected beers in the first email of 2009.  All I can say is that every Friday in January at O’Brien’s will be an unforgettable night of beer (unless you drink too much and then it will be all too forgettable).  And expect the kitchen to be kicking out some amazing food to go with all that great beer.

And as if the beer gods smiled upon us for our 15th Anniversary, Beer Advocate magazine just named O’Brien’s the 15th best beer bar on the planet!

Last Sips

I have some ideas for Christmas gifts from our friends George and Mary at Taste Artisan Cheese and Gourmet shop in Hillcrest.  This is from Mary:

And last, I just want to share a few things with you that have brought me happiness in 2008.  As I mentioned in the last newsletter, John Jorgenson, gypsy-jazz guitarist extraordinaire is coming to San Diego in January.  Tickets are available at www.acousticmusicsandiego.com.  For those who enjoy something heavier, like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden, let me recommend Valient Thorr.  Check them out at: www.valientthorr.com.  And you might have heard us play Rodrigo y Gabriela at the pub.  This Mexican guitar duo has a new live album out that is great – find it at: www.rodgab.com.  And my favorite drink aside from beer is Absinthe.  I can wholly recommend www.absintheclassics.com for all things absinthe.  I have to mention our annual pub crawl through Belgium with Ciao Travel – check out the trip at www.ciaotravel.com.  There are just over 15 seats left in next year’s tour.  Lindsey and I both love Antica Trattoria in La Mesa – www.anticatrattoria.com.  Of course all things beer make me happy and in 2009 we will be going to San Francisco Beer Week – www.sfbeerweek.org.  If you go to San Francisco, stop by Green Apple books – www.greenapplebooks.com – you’ll be glad you did.  And for all things beer in San Diego, check out the Brewers Guild at www.sandiegobrewersguild.org.  And every New Year’s we watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy – truly great movies.  A special thanks to all those who have served our country and community in the armed forces, police and fire department.

So let us wish you all a peaceful and prosperous 2009.  Thanks for making 2008 such a fun year.  We will look forward to raising a glass in cheers with you soon in this year or the next!  With heartfelt appreciation – Tom, Lindsey and the entire O’Brien’s Crew, bartenders: Micaela, Michelle, Coral, Kat, Tiff and cooks: Humberto, Cesar, Jose, Said and Luis!

Strong Ale Fest Pre-Party on Thursday!

Hello Beer Lovers!

I hope that you had an excellent Thanksgiving weekend filled with food, fun, friends and family (and of course beer).  It is hard to believe that it is already December and that soon it will be 2009.  It has been a year of great beer at the pub and luckily for you we have saved some of the best for last.  We have some fantastic events coming up in the next week.  And this weekend is the 12th San Diego Strong Ale Festival at Pizza Port Carlsbad.  It is also the 75th Anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition on Friday, December 5th.

Strong Ale Fest Pre-Party

The fun starts Thursday the 4th as we host our annual pre-party for the Strong Ale Festival.  And what better way to kick it off than to have two strong ale casks – AleSmith YuleSmith and Ballast Point Three Sheets.  We only get two YuleSmith casks a year and they are always fantastic.  The Three Sheets is a 9% barleywine that is very nicely balanced with hops.  Both casks will tap at 5 pm.  In addition to the great cask beers, I have selected some great beers to have on tap including: Bear Republic Racer X, Green Flash West Coast IPA, Port Brewing High Tide IPA, St. Bernardus Christmas, Alaskan Smoked Porter, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Stone 11th Anniversary, Ballast Point Three Sheets aged in Syrah and Bourbon barrels, AleSmith YuleSmith and of course all of the pub favorites – Blind Pig, Pure Hoppiness, Pliny the Elder, Racer 5 and Russian River IPA.  The kitchen will be serving up some great specials as well – look for Jerk Chicken, Chicken and Sausage Gumbo and Lindsey’s legendary Duvel Mac n’ Cheese on the specials board.  We will also have our new merchandise in on Thursday – look for new T shirts and sweatshirts.  For sour beer fans, the Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus is back in stock – it is a blend of cherry and raspberry sour beer.

And for the sadists among us, you can watch the Chargers play the Raiders and yet again rip out our hearts on national television at 5 pm on Thursday as well.

Strong Ale Fest

The fun continues up at Pizza Port Carlsbad at the 12th San Diego Strong Ale Festival on Friday and Saturday, the 5th and the 6th.  The festival will feature more than 75 beers over 8% alcohol from all over the United States.  This is our most diverse beer list ever.  There is beer from Illinois, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii and California.  All strong styles of beer will be represented inlcuding Double IPA, Imperial Stout, Barleywine, Imperial Red, Belgian-style ales, Old Ale and we will even have several cask conditioned strong ales.  There is a ton of beer and the beer list will be the same both days.  To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition on December 5th, we are tapping 75 beers for 75 years.  There will be a new T shirt design with that slogan as well.  And as always, Vince Marsaglia will be cooking up the legendary Festival pizza with smoked bratwurst.

The festival runs from 4 pm to 11 pm on Friday the 5th and from 11 am to 11 pm on Saturday the 6th.  Admission to the fest is $25 which includes a commemorative tasting glass and 8 taster tickets each good for a 4 ounce pour.  Additional taster tickets are just $1 each.  Tickets are only available at the door, there are no advance ticket sales.  The Friday VIP session is completely sold out.  Pizza Port Carlsbad is at 571 Carlsbad Village Drive just a few blocks west of I-5.  The Coaster is a great way to get up there if you are spending the night on Friday in one of the nearby motels or if you are going up on Saturday.  The Saturday morning Coaster at 9:45 am gets you there at 10:48 am and the last train south is at 4:30 pm.  For a complete Coaster schedule, visit: http://www.gonctd.com/coaster_schedules.htm.  Don’t miss one of the country’s great beer festivals, right here in our own backyard.

No matter where you find yourself on December 5th, please raise a toast to celebrate 75 years of beer in America!

Next Week

Next week we have even more great events for you.  The first is on Tuesday, December 9th.  We will have the pleasure of hosting Tonya Cornett from Bend Brewing in Oregon.  Tonya was named the Small Brewing Company Brewmaster of the Year at the 2008 World Beer Cup Awards in San Diego earlier this year.  She will be at the pub along with four of her fantastic beers – Hop Head Imperial IPA (just won a GABF bronze medal), Scarlett Imperial Red, Dopplebock and Elk Lake IPA.  This is a very rare chance to taste these award winning beers from Bend.  It is also the first time that we have hosted an event with an American female head brewer.  Tonya will be at the pub around 5 – 8 pm to answer questions and talk about her great beers.  Please stop by and say hi and enjoy a new beer.  For more info on the brewery, visit: www.bendbrewing.com.

Our second event is on Thursday night, the 11th with New Belgium Brewing.  We will have the brewery’s fantastic Abbey Grand Cru on tap along with the annual winter ale, 2 Below.  NBB glassware will be for sale – we will have a new beuatiful etched goblet glass.  And as if that was not enough.  We will also have a cask of Lagunitas Hop Stoopid double IPA on tap.  Our last Lagunitas cask kind of exploded in the cold box due to overcarbonation and we were only able to serve out a small portion of it.  However, that will not happen again and the brewery has filled up this special cask for us to make up for it.  So while it may not last all night, at least we will be serving all of it.  So stop by for some great rare beer from New Belgium and Lagunitas.  Over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday we will be featuring domestic winter beers including Alaskan Winter Ale, Sam Adams Chocolate Bock and Anchor Christmas among others.  The Chargers have an early game on Sunday the 14th at 10 am and we will open early and serve breakfast.  This is the last early game of the season, and therefore our last breakfast of the season.  So come in for a mimosa and some great food on Sunday.

Holiday Bottles

With the holidays, come great holiday beers.  We have lots of special bottles in stock right now to help bring some much needed cheer.  We have Belgian Christmas beers from Affligem, Achilles, Gouden Carolous, Delirium, Fantome, St. Bernardus, St. Feuiliien, La Chouffe and Scaldis.  We have more winter beers including Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi, Fuller’s Vintage Ale, Alpine Ichabod, Kulmbacher EKU 28, Dansk Old Danish Braggot and the new Stone/Jolly Pumpkin/Nogne O collaboration spiced Holiday Ale.  And there are plenty of other great beers with which to celebrate including several great champagne-style beers – Deus Brut des Flanders, Malheur Brut, Eisenbahn Lust (from Brazil of all places), Malheur Dark Brut (fromerly called Malheur Black Chocolate) and though not truly Champagne-like the incredible Scaldis Prestige is back in stock.  If you like after dinner drinks like port, you will love the Danish meads from Dansk.  We have two in stock right now – Klapojster (made with caraway seed) and GI Dansk (made with ginger and hops).  Both are very strong and have the sweet finish of a tawny port.  If you are coming in with a group, we have lots of big bottles to pop.  We have magnums (1.5 litres) of Chimay Blue Grand Reserve, Gouden Carolous Cuvee van der Keizer and Anchor Christmas.  We have 3 litre bottles of Chimay Blue Grand Reserve, Samichlaus 2007, Duvel and St. Feuillien Tripel.  And if that isn’t big enough, we have 3 different 6 litre bottles (that is 1.6 gallons of beer): Duvel, 2006 Val Dieu Grand Cru and the brand new St. Bernardus Abt 12 which comes in a large wooden box.  Our 10% off all bottles special on Saturday and Sunday applies to all bottles, even the big ones.  And any import bottle may be purchased to go (limit one per customer per day).

For soccer fans, the US men’s national team will play Sweden on Saturday, January 24th at the Home Depot Center.  Tickets are on sale now.  This will be the last warm up game before the USA starts the final round of World Cup Qualifying on February 11th against Mexico.  This should be a great chance to see some of the US stars on the field.  UEFA Champions League group play will finish up on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 9th and 10th and we will have live games on both days at 11:30 am.  If you would like to get on our soccer specific email list, just reply to this email with a note about joining the soccer list.

And finally I have one off topic thing to mention.  One of mine and Lindsey’s favorite muscians is coming to San Diego in January – John Jorgenson.  He is a gypsy jazz guitarist in the tradition of Django Reinhardt and he plays guitar and clarinet.  He is playing at Acoustic Music San Diego which hosts it’s concerts in a church in Normal Heights.  It is a nice venue with great sound and it is very intimate.  If you have never been to one of their shows, check out the website at www.acousticmusicsandiego.com.  They have some very unique shows.  John Jorgenson is also playing a house concert in Vista on January 17th for those that live in the north county.  For more information about John Jorgenson, visit: www.johnjorgenson.com.

That is your good beer update for now.  Look for more Belgian Christmas beers to be on tap on Friday the 19th.  The pub will be closed on December 24th, 25th and 26th for Christmas as well as December 31st and January 1st for New Year’s.  We will be open normal hours all other days.  We will see you soon for a great strong ale!  Cheers, Tom
