Alpine Exponential on Tap!

There is still plenty of beer left from our 5 batch vertical tasting of Alpine’s Exponential Hoppiness.  We got a full keg of the new batch that is still mostly full.  And there is still plenty of beer left from the four vintage batches that go back to July, 2005.  From today on – Wednesday the 25th, we’ll be doing pints of the new batch and 5 and 10 ounce samples of the vintage beers.

Liverpool plays Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League at 11:30 am today.  The game will also be replayed at 2 pm and 6 pm.

You can read the post below for further upcoming events.  Enjoy the Exponential!  Cheers, Tom

Alpine Exponential and so much more…

Hello Good Beer Fans!

Yet again, there is just too much good beer to write about.  The upside is that you will be able to enjoy even more world class beer at the pub in the coming weeks.

The big news of course is our 5 batch vertical tasting of Alpine’s Exponential Hoppiness.  We have 5 gallon kegs of 4 previous batches including kegs from July and October of 2005 along with January and July of 2006.  We also have a full 15 gallon keg of the new batch.  For the evening of the tasting we will be limiting all Exponential pours to 5 or 10 ounces so that everyone has a chance to sample them.  Whatever is left on Wednesday (if anything) will then be available for full pint pours.  All 5 kegs will be on tap by 5 pm with the full keg of the new batch probably finding its way on a little earlier.  We’ll still be doing our regular Roll It Night on all of the regular local and craft beers.

As for other events this week, we tap a cask of Alpine Nelson Rye IPA at 5 pm on Thursday the 26th.  This beer is made with 18% rye and uses special New Zealand hops that give it a unique aroma that is reminiscent of Sauvingnon Blanc almost.  And Friday the 27th is Sierra Nevada night – we’ll have all of our Sierra Beers on special including the new Schwarz beer, Bigfoot and a keg of Harvest ale.  We’ll also have Sierra pint glasses for sale.

Next week we start off with our every Monday pitcher special.  We have $8 pitchers of all local and craft beers and $12 pitchers of all strong ales from 4:30 pm to Close – every Monday.  We also have our great beer battered Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos on special every Sunday and Monday.

Wednesday the 2nd we will have a Pizza Port night featuring a hoppy beer from each of the 3 Pizza Port brewpubs and the new Port Brewing in San Marcos (Pizza Port took over the old Stone Brewery when Stone moved to Escondido).  From Solana Beach we will have Hop Through It (a new and excellent double IPA), Carlsbad’s Poor Man’s IPA, San Clemente’s El Camino IPA (from new head brewer Noah Regnery) and from Port Brewing a keg of Hop 15.  We’ll also have a Pin (5 gallon cask) of Carlsbad’s Good Grief English Brown Ale to tap at 5 pm

On Thrusday the 3rd we have a cask of Alpine’s Exponential Hoppiness at 5 pm.  And yes we will be doing full pints.  Friday the 4th is Ballast Point night with kegs of Sculpin IPA, Even Keel Session Ale, Dorado Double IPA and Hot Rail Helles Lager.

Coming soon on the draft front we have Stone Imperial Stout, Coronado Idiot IPA, more kegs of the La Chouffe Houblon IPA and a keg of Monk’s Cafe sour Brown (brewed by Petrus).  We also have casks coming of Green Flash Le Freak Belgian IPA and San Diego Brewing’s Hopnotic.  I just got in the new Lost Abbey Judgment Day, which is the massive 10.5% Belgian-style quadrupel that serves as the base beer for the Cuvee de Tomme.  I am hoping to have the Rochefort 8 and 10 back in stock by next Tuesday, May 1st.  We still have the Rochefort 6 in stock.  Bottles of the Redstone Mead will be back in stock by this Thursday (the 26th).

We have been facing increased costs on our imported beer bottles for some time now.  In an effort to not raise the prices, we will be reducing the 20% off bottles To Go on the weekends to 10%.  So you will be able to get 10% off all bottles on the list at the pub and 10% off any import bottle To Go, starting May 1st.  We will still honor the 20% off To Go import bottles this weekend, April 28th and 29th.

Looking ahead we will be closed on Sunday, May 13th for Mother’s Day and Monday, May 28th for Memorial Day.  On Thursday, May 31st we will have a pre-party for the San Diego Real Ale Festival featuring 4 cask conditioned beers from Alpine Beer Company including barrel aged stout, Exponential, Nelson and Pure Hoppiness.  The festival will be Friday and Saturday, June 1st and 2nd at Pizza Port Carlsbad.  There will be a VIP session on Friday much like the VIP session at the Strong Ale Festival.  The festival will also have bottle conditioned real ales for the first time.  And Satruday June 9th is the big craft beer festival at the San Diego County Fair featuring more than 75 beers from the Fair’s first ever craft beer competition.

You have probably noticed the major construction changes at the pub.  I would love to tell you when it will all be done, but I have no idea.  The stucco work was due to be done a month ago and we still have the chicken wire up.  At least they are making some progress on the rest of the center.  Hopefully the scaffolding will be gone this weekend.

In addition to the exterior changes, you will likely have noticed some new faces.  Michele is taking some time off to enjoy being a mom to her new son Simon, who was born last week.  She is planning on coming back after July 4th.  In the meantime, we have hired Kat as a new bartender(her real name is Lindsey, but we already have Lindsey).  She also works part time at the Beauty Bar.  She works Monday thru Friday right now mostly in the afternoon and evenings.

We also hired two new cooks.  One of our cooks, Francisco, had to move back to Mexico.  So we hired Jose and Joe (whose real name is also Jose, but we can’t have two Joses either).  Jose is working days with Humberto and Joe is working nights with Cesar.  Both are making great food and Joe has been making the new salsa for our Chips and Salsa appetizer.

That is all for now.  I am to enjoy a beer dinner at La Jolla Brew House.  They host a beer dinner almost every month – usually on the 3rd Monday – and the cost is always very reasonable.  Take care and we’ll see you soon over a great beer.  Cheers, Tom

Even Keel Cask and Alaskan Night

Tonight at the pub (Thursday, 4/19) we have a cask of Ballast Point Even Keel at 5 pm. This is a hoppy ale that is only 5%, but drinks like a much bigger beer.  It is a great San Diego session ale.  We also have some great new beers on tap including a very fresh and tasty keg of Anchor Liberty, the new Sierra Nevada Schwarz Beer – the Sierra Rauch Beer is also back, and we have the Coronado Idiot IPA which is the best beer I have ever had from Coronado Brewing.  It is a great 8% alcohol strong IPA.

Tomorrow night, Friday the 20th, we are hosting an Alaskan Brewing Night with the Alaskan Summer and Alaskan Amber on tap.  We’ll have Summer Ale and Amber Ale pint glasses for sale too, for just $2 each.  I also have some new Rogue pint glasses for sale for $2 as well.  Speaking of Rogue, we have the Rogue Brutal Bitter in 22 oz bottles now.  I also got a case of the Sam Adams Double Bock for old times sake.  It was the first bock beer I ever tasted and I still like it today.  It brings back fond memories of buying beer at age 19 back in college.

Next week we have our epic 5 batch Alpine Exponential Hoppiness vertical tasting on Tuesday the 24th.  All five beers will be on by 5 pm and will be limited to 5 or 10 ounce tasters.  Next Thursday we will tap a cask of Alpine’s Nelson Rye IPA on the 26th at 5 pm.  And the 27th will be a Sierra Nevada Pint night.  That is your quick update for now.  Look for an email on Monday.  Cheers, Tom

Last Call for Beer and Cheese Tasting!

Greetings Fellow Beer Lovers!

A quick note to let you know that our Beer and Cheese Tasting for Sunday, April 29th at O’Brien’s is SOLD OUT.  However, if you would like to attend, there is still some space left for the first class this Wednesday, April 11th at Taste Artisan Cheese and Gourmet Shop in Hillcrest at 7 pm.  They are still about 10 seats left as of this writing.  You can sign up at the pub or call Taste at 619-683-2306 to reserve a spot with a credit card.  Taste is located at 1243 University Ave right next door to Wine Steals.  Here are the featured pairings for this class:

1) Haystack Sunlight / Ballast Yellowtail
2) Comte / Maredsous 8
3) Mahon Curado / North Coast Pranqster
4) Ardrahan / Malheur Brut
5) St. George & Roncal / Chimay Red
6) Roaring 40s Blue / Schneider Aventinus

In all it is 6 beers and 7 cheeses.  This will be our last Beer and Cheese Tasting until the Fall.  We do 4 classes a year with Taste – 2 in the Spring and 2 in the fall.

Also on deck this week we have the release of the new Alpine Nelson IPA.  It is a rye IPA (18% rye) that uses New Zealand hops.  It will be on tap Wednesday the 11th.  Thursday the 12th is a cask of Swami’s IPA from Pizza Port Solana Beach at 5 pm.  It has been a while since we have had any Swami’s IPA and I am really looking forward to this cask.  The UEFA Champions League return legs are this week – all games live at 11:30 am on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Check the website for full listings.

On the kitchen front, we have the Cambozola Burger and Cambozola Melt back on special as well as the Fried Mushrooms for an appetizer.  Look for a new Crab and Asparagus soup on Friday.  And every Sunday and Monday we run our Beer Battered Fish specials – Fish and Chips, Fish Tacos and the Chipotle Fish Sandwich.  Be sure to stop by for our Monday night $8 pitcher special too – $8 pitchers of all local and craft beers, $12 pitchers of rare and strong ales 4:30 pm to Close.

Friday the 13th is the big Triple IPA night with the release of the new Alpine Exponential Hoppiness on tap along with Russian River Pliny the Younger, Avery Maharaja and La Chouffe Houblon IPA.  Everything will be on tap by 5 pm – probably earlier, but I won’t gaurantee it in writing.

That is all for now.  Have a great week and we’ll see you soon over a great beer.  Cheers, Tom

Beer and Cheese, Easter and Expo

Good Morning Good Beer Fans!

I have to confess that I am drinking tea (English Breakfast with cream, no sugar), not beer while writing today’s email.  So I won’t be able to tease you during the email.

Spots for our Beer and Cheese tastings with Taste Artisan Cheese and Gourmet Shop are filling up quickly.  The first class is next week on Wednesday, April 11th at 7 pm at Taste in Hillcrest (which is on University Ave).  The second class, which is nearly sold out, will be on Sunday, April 29th at 6 pm at O’Brien’s.  We will feature 7 cheeses paired with 6 beers.  Some of the pairings are: Comte with Maredsous 8, Mahon Curado with North Coast Pranqster, Adrahan with Malheur Brut and St George and Roncal paired with Chimay Premiere Red Cap.  This class features all new cheeses and all new beers from our previous classes.  You can sign up at Taste (see the link on our website’s Friends page) or at the pub.  Cost is $35.  If you have any questions, please email me.  I expect most of the spots to be gone by Monday.

Tonight (Friday the 6th) for you lucky readers we celebrate Brew Year’s Eve and the anniversary of the repeal of the prohibition on beer on April 7, 1933.  We have two hoppy kegs from Pizza Port for the night – Solana Beach’s great Yiga’s Revenge IPA and San Clemente’s Doheny Double IPA.  Both were very popular last night when tapped.  This is only the second time we have gotten kegs of either of these beers.

Tomorrow, Saturday the 7th we will be open normal hours all day from Noon to 11 pm.  In addition to our 10% off all bottles special, we will be running our great Beer Battered Fish and Chips and Fish Tacos all day, since we will be CLOSED Sunday the 8th for Easter.  Despite what you may be thinking, le me assure that medical research has shown that it is possible for the human body to live without visiting O’Brien’s for 24 Hours.

New at the pub this week – we have plenty of new bottles, some of which are from the 12 Hour Belgian Beer Party, including Rodenbach Grand Cru, Malheur Brut, Cantillon 2004 Lou Pepe Kriek, Boon Kriek, St. Bernardus 8, De Proef Zoetzuur Flemish Ale, Baladin Wayan Saison and the new (and quite hoppy) Cantillon 2004 Iris – which is the only Cantillon beer to be made with fresh hops and it is also dry hopped.  We also have a few bottles of Mead left from our giant tasting last week that will be on the bottle list this weekend.

We also have some new draft additions – Lost Coast Chocolate Porter, AleSmith Lil Devil – which is a smaller version of Horny Devil that tastes similar to a Belgian Wit beer, Craftsman Cabernale – it is made with Cabernet grapes, but has a low alcohol content of under 6%.  Look for the La Chouffe Houblon IPA, Monk’s Cafe Sour Brown and Green Flash Le Freak Belgian IPA all to be on tap in the next few days.

Next week, in addition to the Beer and Cheese Tasting, we have some great events for you.  Wednesday the 11th we debut the new batch of Alpine’s Nelson IPA on tap.  This beer is made with New Zealand hops and has an incredible aroma.  Thursday the 12th we have a cask of Pizza Port Solana Beach’s Swami’s IPA – we haven’t had one in a long time, so I am really looking forward to this.  And the big news is our Friday the 13th Attack of the Triple IPAs night with the brand new Alpine Exponential Hoppiness, Russian River Pliny the Younger, Avery Maharaja and La Chouffe Houblon IPA all on tap.

And if that wasn’t enough for you, we will be doing a five batch Vertical Tasting of the Alpine Exponential Hoppiness on Tuesday, April 24th.  This will also serve as the pub birthday party for owner/brewer Pat McIllhenny, whose birthday is the 29th.  So you can stop on by and buy Pat a beer and thank him for making so much Pure Hoppiness for us.

Further off in the future we have casks of Ballast Point’s Even Keel, Alpine Nelson IPA and Exponential Hoppiness, Green Flash Le Freak Belgian IPA and San Diego Brewing Co.’s great new Hopnotnic IPA.  If you haven’t been to SD Brewing lately, new brewer Dean Rouleau is making some great new house beers and bringing a whole new attitude to all of their beers.  It is worth the trip.  Also, check out the the Linkery in South Park – they are hosting a beer dinner later this month featuring Ballast Point beers all paired with the fish the beer is named after (Wahoo with Wahoo Wheat, etc..).  The San Diego Brewers Guild Lager Festival may have hit some licensing snags with the ever generous bureuacrats at the ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) – check out the Guild’s website at www.sandiegobrewersguild.org for the latest information.  And for those who have asked me about the Real Ale Fest up at Pizza Port Carlsbad, it will be on June 1st and 2nd – when I know more, I will pass it on.

That is all for now.  Have a great weekend and please lift a beer in cheers of the repeal on the prohibition of beer.  Cheers, Tom

Saturday, April 7th is the anniversary of the repeal on the prohibtion of beer in 1933.  We’ll be celebrating Friday for Brew Year’s Eve with two hoppy beers from Pizza Port – Solana Beach’s Yiga Revenge IPA and San Clemente’s Doheny Double IPA.  And Friday the 13th we have a night of BIG beers planned with Alpine’s Exponential Hoppiness, Russian River Pliny the Younger, Avery Maharaja and La Chouffe Houblon IPA.

Cheers, Tom
