Lightning Strikes, Mead & Final Four

Hello Good Beer Fans!

First off I just want to say how great it was to see so many pub patrons at the Belgian Beer Party this past weekend at Pizza Port.  Thanks to everyone who braved the line and the crowds.  More than 200 cases and 20 kegs were consumed in the 12 hours – it was a ton of fun.  And I love any excuse to put on my monk outfit.

On the pub front, we still have our Belgian pre-party ales on tap – De Koninck Winter Ale, Geants Saison Voisin and in place of the Duchess keg that wouldn’t pour I tapped our last keg of the Dutch Mastreechs Ajit Flemish Red (same style, but drier than the Duchess).  When that blows, I have some of the Monk’s Cafe Sour Brown to tap, which is made by Petrus, but is a special blend (less sweet than the Petrus Oud Bruin) just for Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia.  Also new on tap is the great Avery Maharaja Imperial IPA – nearly 10% and quite a hop punch.  The AleSmith IPA is back on tap as is the Boddingtons Pub Ale.

I will have a bunch of new bottles on the menu this weekend.  We do already have bottles of the great Malheur Brut in stock – it is champagne-style similar to the Bosteels Deus Brut des Flanders.  I will have some bottles from the festival in limited quantities available as of Saturday.

This week’s cask beer is the Alpine Irish Red on Thursday the 29th at 5 pm.  And as an excuse to get our cook Humberto to make more Guinness Gravy, we are re-visiting our St. Patrick’s Day with Corned Beef and Cabbage (along with mashed potatoes and the delicious Guinness Gravy) and Bangers and Mash with Guinness Gravy.  Unfortunately, you will not be able to order pint glasses full of the gravy to drink – but you will want to.  So if you missed it on St. Patty’s, or just didn’t get enough Corned Beef, this is your chance.

Friday the 30th is our Lightning Brewery night with Fulminator Double Bock, Thunderweizen (a German-style Hefeweizen), Black Lightning Porter and Pilsner.  We will also have some logo pint glasses for sale from the Poway-based brewery.  And it sounds like the owner and brewer will be coming by to have a pint or two.  All of the Lightning beers will be on tap by 5 pm Friday and on special all night.  Lindsey will be dubeting the new Camembert Burger at Friday lunch as well.

Saturday is the Final starting at 3:07 pm with Ohio State v. Georgetown.  The Florida v. UCLA will be on immediately after.  We’ll show both in High Def.  The Championship is Monday night at 6 pm.  Every Monday we feature $8 pitchers of all local and craft brews and strong ale pitchers are just $12 from 4 to close.  We also run our great beer battered fish and chips and fish tacos every Monday and Sunday.

Sunday, April 1st is our Mead Day and Mead Tasting.  David Myers, owner and meadmaker of Redstone Meadery will be leading a tasting of meads from the International Mead Festival at 5:30 pm (he also organizes the International Mead Fest).  I unpacked the boxes of meads this week and the list will be very impressive.  Here is a sample of what will taste – Redstone 2003 Boysenberry Reserve Mead, Rabbits Foot Apple Cyser, Dwojniak Herb Mead (from Poland), Jardins Melliferes Blueberry Mead, Adytum Cellars Harvest Moon Mead, Long Island Root Beer Mead (really!) and many more!  Cost is $25 and includes some light snacks prepared by Lindsey.  Sign up at the pub to reserve your spot – we have about a dozen spaces left.  We will have a mead making demonstration on the newly expanded patio at 3 pm and David will be around between 2 and 4 pm to answer questions about mead and pour some Redstone Meads by the glass.

Next week I have lined up a double dose of hoppy Pizza Port ales.  On Thursday, April 5th we will have a cask of Wipeout IPA from Pizza Port Carlsbad.  And to celebrate the repeal of the Prohibition on beer we will have draft kegs of Yiga’s Revenge IPA from Solana Beach and Doheny Double IPA from San Clemente.  The prohibition of beer was repealed on April 7th, 1933.  So we’ll celebrate Brew Year’s Eve a little early.  We will be closing down on Sunday, April 8th for Easter Sunday, but we will be open all day Saturday until 11 pm for your beer drinking pleasure.

For those interested in soccer, the UEFA Champions League resumes next week with the first leg of the quarter finals.  The first games – PSV v. Liverpool and AC Milan v. Bayern Munich will both be LIVE at 11:30 am on Tuesday the 3rd.  Chelsea v. Valencia and AS Roma v. Manchester United will both be LIVE at 11:30 am on Wednesday the 4th.  You can find the complete list of soccer games at the pub on our website.  We also have a soccer-specific email list that goes out twice a month to list upcoming games – if you want to sign up, just reply to this email.

Further off in the following week we have our first beer and cheese tasting at Taste Artisan Cheese Shop in Hillcrest at 7 pm on Wednesday the 11th.  We did the pairings on Monday and we have all new beers and all new cheeses.  Some of the beer highlights include Schneider Aventinus, Chimay Red Cap, Maredsous 8 and Malheur Brut.  Also on Wednesday the 11th we will be debuting the new batch of Alpine Nelson IPA made with New Zealand hops.

And Friday, April 13th I have a Triple Threat of Triple IPAs planned for this spooky day – the new Alpine Exponential Hoppiness, Avery Maharaja IPA and Russian River Pliny the Younger.  All three will be on tap at 5 pm and who knows how long they will last.  There may be other hopy draft surprises as well.

That is all for now.  We’ll see you soon over a good beer and some Guinness Gravy.  Cheers, Tom

USA Plays, EPL and UCL!

Hello Soccer Enthusiasts!

The big news of the day is the USA v. Guatemala match set for tonight, Wednesday the 28th at 6 pm on ESPN2.  We’ll have the game on in High Definition with the sound on.  The US is 3-0 under “interim” head coach Bob Bradley and Landon Donovon is coming off his best game in years.  Mexico plays right afterwards at 8 pm against Ecuador on Telemundo.

Today and tomorrow there are lots of Euro 2008 qualifiers, including several on delay – the England v. Andorra game will be on Saturday at 12:30 (if it is even worth watching).

This weekend the domestic leagues start back up and there are lots of good match-ups.  Next week the Champions League begins the first leg quarter-final match ups (4 gmaes shown LIVE) as does the UEFA Cup which will be carried on Fox Soccer.  Fox is also airing the semi-finals of the Concacaf Champions Cup where DC United and the Houston Dynamo are still alive and both face teams from Mexico.  And it looks like I will soon be able to get ESPN Deportes at the pub which means even more Champions League matches along with lots of soccer from South America including Copa America and Copa Libertadores.

Feel free to pass this email on to anyone who might be interested.  And as always, I will post all of this on our website – www.obrienspub.net – in the news section, just click on the soccer category to see the latest list of games.  This week’s cask will be Alpine Irish Red on Thursday the 29th at 5 pm and Friday is Lightning Brewery night with four of their beers on tap.  This Sunday, April 1st at 5:30 pm is our Mead (honey wine) tasting with David Myers of Redstone Mead.  It will feature at least 14 meads from the International Mead Festival – sign up at the pub.  And now for the big list of upcoming soccer.  Cheers, Tom

More Patio, Belgian Fest and Mead!

Hello Good Beer Fans!

Welcome to another beer news-filled email from O’Brien’s Pub.  We survived St. Patrick’s Day and still have some of the great stouts from the weekend on tap including the Ballast Point Sextant Oatmeal Stout, Alpine Captain Stout and Pizza Port Carlsbad’s Port Truck Stout (nitro) and Night Rider Imperial Stout.  And tonight, Wednesday the 21st, we will have a cask of Alpine’s Captain Stout on at 5 pm!

The big news this week is that O’Brien’s is now bigger!  Our patio expansion is finished, even though the construction is not yet done.  The fence line is now six feet further out down the entier length of the patio.  This provides us with almost 20 new seats on the patio.  We will be looking into adding more heaters once the construction is done – but at this rate, and with summer approaching, that probably won’t be until the fall.  We added one new table and pulled most of the other tables away from the wall to add extra seats around them.  The end result is much more seating and much more standing room.

As for what is coming up the rest of this week.  We have two five gallon casks on Thursday the 22nd – Green Flash West Coast IPA and Alpine Captain Stout, both at 5 pm.  You can also check out our new Bacon Gouda burger with a smoked Gouda with black peppercorn – it is awesome. On Friday, look for a pre-party for the Belgian Beer Party at Pizza Port Carlsbad on Saturday.  I’ve got kegs of the popular Geants Saison Voisin along with Duchess de Bourgogne and De Koninck Winter Ale.  I’ll tap more if I have room for it.  In the Belgian queue is a keg of the new vintage of Cantillon Lou Pepe Framboise and our last keg of Mastreechs Aijt Flemish Ale from Holland.  And there will be lots of Euro 2008 qualifying games this weekend – you can see the complete list on the news page of the website under the soccer category or under archives.

The 12 Hour Belgian Beer Party will be held THIS Saturday, March 24th at Pizza Port Carlsbad from 11 am to 11 pm.  This is one of the premier collections of Belgian beer in the country featuring more than 75 different Belgian and Belgian-style beers across many styles including Wits, Lambics, Golden Ales, Trappist Ales and Belgian Strong Ales.  There will be beers from Belgium, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, France and the USA available on draft and in bottles.  Full bottles and glassware will also be for sale and there will be a 3 litter bottle opened every hour, along with 6 and 9 liter bottles of Russian River Damnation at 6 pm and 9 pm respectively.

I finished up the beer list for the fest on Monday and some of the highlights include: four beers from Malheur, five Russian River beers, the new Lost Abbey Judgment Day and 6 Cantillon beers including Lou Pepe Kriek on draft.  In all we expect nearly 90 beers to be poured.  As it is every year, this is the festival of ours that I am most excited to drink at.  This will also be the 25th beer festival at Pizza Port Carlsbad that I have organized with friends Tomme Arthur and Jeff Bagby in the last 10 years.  Admission is $35 and includes 10 taster tickets and a Belgian drinking glass.  Additional taster tickets are just $1.  Pizza Port Carlsbad is located at 571 Carlsbad Village Drive just 1/2 mile west of I-5 and only a few blocks from the Carlsbad Coaster station.  For more information visit the Pizza Port website at www.pizzaport.com.  As an added bonus – it looks like there will be a keg of Blind Pig IPA on tap Saturday next door at Port Carlsbad!

Next Sunday, April 1st is our annual Mead (honey wine) Tasting and Mead Day (no fooling).  I will have the two Redstone Nectars – Sunshine and Black Raspberry – on tap along with Redstone Mead, Mountain Meadows and others available to sample by the glass from 1 to 4 pm.  Homebrewers who make mead and would like to show off their wares are invited to a bring bottle of mead to share.  There will also be a mead making demonstration at 3 pm to show how easy mead making is.  David Myers, owner of Redstone Mead will be there as well.  We will also have a formal mead tasting led by David Myers of Redstone (and organizer of the International Mead Fest) at 5:30 pm featuring meads from the International Mead Festival along with some special reserve bottles of Redstone Mead.  While there is no charge for the Mead Day afternon festivities, the 5:30 pm tasting is $25 and will include at least a dozen meads and some light snacks prepared by Lindsey – reservations are heavily suggested.  Please sign up at the pub to reserve your spot for the tasting – space is limited and this event has sold out every year.

And while I am on the subject of tastings, our Beer and Cheese Tasting with Taste Artisan Cheese and Gourmet shop in Hillcrest will be coming up in April – on Wednesday the 11th at Taste at 7 pm, and on Sunday the 29th at 6 pm at O’Brien’s.  I will have the list of pairings for you next week.  The cost is $35 and will include 7 beers and 7 cheeses – and plenty of both.  I will lead the class with George Palmer, co-owner with his wife Mary of Taste.  For more information on Taste, check out the friends page of our website.  In addition to cheese, the shop sells great salumi, olive oil balsamic vinegar and many other gourmet goodies including truffle butter.  You can sign up and reserve your spot at either Taste or at the pub.

Next week you can look forward to a cask of Alpine’s Irish Red on Thursday the 29th.  Friday the 30th is Lightning Night at O’Brien’s.  We have had several kegs from this new brewery, most recently the Black Lightning Porter, but this will be the first time we have had a bunch of their beers on at one time.  The line up right now is looking like Pilsner, Thunderweizen (a true German-style Hefe), the Black Lightning and a new double bock named Fulminator.  We’ll also have some pint glasses for sale as well.  And then the aforementioned Mead tasting on Sunday the 1st.  Further off, we will celebrate the repeal of Prohibition on Friday, April 6th (the actual date is the 7th).

That is all for now.  We’ll see you soon over a great beer (and mead!).  Cheers, Tom

St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations!

Greetings Good Beer Fans!

St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us and that means even more great beer than usual at the pub.  Lindsey and I are back from our vacation and we are almost adjusted to west coast time, but not to daylight savings.  The 24 Hour Beer Festival in Belgium was incredible and Amsterdam again proved itself to be one of the best beer drinking cities in the world.  Next year the pub tour will spend an entire week in Belgium and visit more breweries (this year we visited the brewery where Duvel is made).  For more information, visit www.ciaotravel.com.  Our own website (www.obrienspub.net) has been in the midst of switching servers and I have not been able to update it.  It will be updated this afternoon and I will stay on top of it again after this I promise.

There are a lot of new bottles in stock at the pub including De Ranke Kriek, Cantillon Classic Geuze, Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze, Russian River Supplication, Nogne O Imperial Stout (from Norway), De Dolle Oerbier Reserva, Avery Czar Imperial Stout and we have more Westvletern that just came, so the Green Cap (6) is back as well.

We also have a bunch of new merchandise.  We have new pint glasses printed in green in two slogans – the popular “I didn’t come here to save money or lose weight” and “I (shamrock) Hops” – sorry there is no character key for a shamrock.  They are $3 each or 4 for $10.  We also have the I shamrock Hops slogan on two new girl’s Ts that are white with either yellow or green sleeves and the O’Brien’s lion logo on the back.  And we have green men’s shirts and two-tone green girl’s shirts for St. Patty’s.  We restocked men’s and women’s black hooded sweatshirts.  In addition to the O’Brien’s gear, there are Green Flash and Alpine pint glasses for sale for just $2 each.

On draft we are gearing up for plenty of stouts this weekend.  Murphy’s stout will be the first one on tap probably later today.  The Alpine McIllhenny’s Irish Red will be on tap soon along with the Alpine Captain Stout.  There is still some of the Green Flash beers from last Friday’s promo including some Imperial IPA, Barleywine and Le Freak – which is the Imperial IPA recipe made with a Belgian-style yeast strain.  For those who have been going through withdrawl symptons, the Alpine Pure Hoppiness should be back early Friday afternoon on the 16th.  You can also look for Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and Sextant Stout to be on tap this weekend (read on for news of a Sculpin Cask).  I am also getting a keg of Port Carlsbad’s Port Truck stout and we will have Guinness and Harp for St. Patrick’s Day.  And for those enjoying the Cantillon 1900 Grand Cru, it is almost gone and won’t make it to the weekend.  Our new Belgian beer is a keg of Hoegaarden (though it is not actually made in Belgium anymore).

And now on to those beer and food events that drive you crazy while you read this (don’t you wish you were enjoying a beer like me right now?)

Thursday the 15th marks the beginning of the NCAA Basketball tournament – we do CSTV to get the afternoon game at 2 pm, and all CBS games will in High Def.  It is also the beginning of our St. Patty’s celebrations so I am rolling out not one, but two casks for Thursday night – Pizza Port Carlsbad Poor Man’s IPA (which is probably my favorite San Diego beer at the moment) and Alpine Captain Stout – both at 5 pm.  And just because Lindsey loves all of you, our famous Beer Chili will be ready for Thursday night (and that means chili nachos too).   The Alpine Irish Red will be on tap for Thursday as well.

Friday the 16th we will be in full St. Patrick’s Day mode with Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Stout Stew, and Corned Beef sandwiches on the menu all day long.
And as a special Friday lunch treat I have a cask of Alpine Irish Red to tap fresh at 11:30 am.  Again we will have two casks for the evening at 5 pm – Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and Alpine Vanilla Captain Stout.  Pat put vanilla beans right in the cask as a kind of dry hop.  We have had this beer on draft before and it was tasty and very popular.  We will also be staying open late and keeping the kitchen open late on Friday and Saturday.  Look for last call to be after midnight and the kitchen to be open until 10:30 or 11 pm.  And the contractor in charge of the center’s remodel swore to me today that the patio expansion would be finished on Friday morning – don’t hold your breath though.  There will also be lots of NCAA basketball on Friday too.

Saturday the 17th is the actual St. Patrick’s day and we will have the same great food specials including Corned Beef and Cabbage all day long.  I also have fresh casks of Alpine Irish Red and Alpine Captain Stout to tap on Saturday.  We’ll have an afternoon cask on by 1 pm and the evening cask on by 6 pm.  We will have Guinnes and Harp on tap and the Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and Sextant Stout.  The Port Truck Stout will also be on tap for Saturday night.  Again the pub and kitchen will be open late – look for last call to again be after midnight with the kitchen open until at least 10 pm.  And we will be expanding our Saturday hours until 11 pm with the kitchen open until 9 pm after next weekend (after the 12 Houir Belgian Beer Party at Port Carlsbad).  So be sure to stop by at some point during the day and spread a little cheer with some great beer.

Sunday, if you need to abuse yourself further (or if you avoided abusing yourself on Saturday) we will be open normal hours, 12-5 pm.

Next week is the 12 Hour Belgian Beer Party at Pizza Port Carlsbad from 11 am to 11 pm on Saturday the 24th.  There will be more than 80 Belgian and Belgian-style beers available including some really great rare beers like Malheur.  For more information check out www.pizzaport.com.  I’ll also have more details next week when we finalize the beer list.

That is all for now.  We’ll see you this weekend for a St. Patrick’s Day beer.  Cheers, Tom
